Ceramic Experience in Corfu: Create a Protective Medusa Relief

  1. Workshop Format

This is a guided 2-hour ceramic experience inspired by findings at the Archaeological Museum of Corfu. Clay moulds were historically used to create objects that, among other functions, carried protective symbols and were likely traded across the Mediterranean.

In this workshop, participants will work with clay moulds developed in our studio, based on a reimagining of how artisans may have worked in historical ceramic workshops in the Corfu area.

Participants will be guided through basic hand-building techniques. At the end of the session, each participant will remove their piece from the mould to reveal a relief based on their chosen design.

We offer three design options:

  • two Medusa-inspired portraits
  • one female portrait

All designs were created in our studio and draw inspiration from artefacts in the museum.

Important: The ceramic piece created during the workshop is not taken home by the participant. Instead, participants will receive a finished ceramic piece, prepared and safe for travel, created by previous participants.

All created works remain in the studio after the session to dry and be finished where necessary, becoming part of the ongoing Medusa Exchange Project (see Section 2).

By participating, you acknowledge and accept this workshop format.

  1. Exchange Project Concept

At the end of the workshop, each participant receives one finished ceramic piece, prepared for travel.

This piece has been created by another participant during a previous session.

In this way, each object becomes part of a quiet exchange between strangers, passing from one set of hands to another and continuing its journey beyond the studio. The idea draws inspiration from the movement of ceramic objects across the Mediterranean, as reflected in the collections of the Archaeological Museum of Corfu.

Your own piece will remain in the studio to be received by someone else in the future.

Each piece is unique. Items are selected from available studio stock and may vary in form, colour, and detail.

While participants may express a preference where possible, a specific item cannot always be guaranteed.

  1. Handmade Nature of Ceramics

Ceramics is a handmade process involving clay, drying, shrinkage, and firing.

Small imperfections, variations, marks, asymmetries, texture differences, and natural irregularities are part of the character of handmade ceramic work and are not considered defects.

The exchanged pieces are handmade and unique.

  1. Studio Environment & Safety

Participants enter an active ceramic studio environment.

Please note:

  • the studio contains ceramic tools, sharp objects, fragile works, shelves, and raw materials requiring careful handling
  • access to the workshop space involves a narrow staircase, as it is located in the backstage area of the studio. Unfortunately, the space is not wheelchair accessible and may not be suitable for individuals with significant mobility difficulties
  • two resident cats live in the studio

By booking, participants acknowledge that:

  • they are comfortable being in a space with cats
  • they do not have severe allergies, fears, or conditions preventing safe participation in such an environment
  • they are able to use the staircase to access the workshop space

Participants agree to:

  • follow instructor guidance
  • use tools responsibly
  • respect studio equipment, works, and other participants

Participants acknowledge that working with clay and studio tools involves a degree of physical activity and accept responsibility for their participation.

To ensure a safe and pleasant experience for everyone, the studio may ask a participant to step out if their behaviour is unsafe or significantly disruptive. In such cases, refunds may not be possible.

  1. Clothing & Personal Belongings

Clay may stain clothing.

Participants are advised to wear practical clothing suitable for studio work.

Aprons are provided, but full protection cannot be guaranteed.

The studio is not responsible for damage to clothing, jewellery, or personal belongings.

The piece you create during the workshop will remain in the studio, becoming part of an ongoing exchange between participants.

In return, you will receive a finished ceramic piece created by someone who attended before you, continuing a quiet cycle of making and exchange.

This exchange is a central part of the workshop’s concept and experience.
